37 바울을 데리고 영내로 들어가려 할 그 때에 바울이 천부장에게 이르되 내가 당신에게 말할 수 있느냐 이르되 네가 헬라 말을 아느냐

37 [Paul Speaks to the Crowd] As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, "May I say something to you?" "Do you speak Greek?" he replied.

38 그러면 네가 이전에 소요를 일으켜 자객 사천 명을 거느리고 광야로 가던 애굽인이 아니냐

38 "Aren't you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?"

39 바울이 이르되 나는 유대인이라 소읍이 아닌 길리기아 다소 시의 시민이니 청컨대 백성에게 말하기를 허락하라 하니

39 Paul answered, "I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people."

40 천부장이 허락하거늘 바울이 층대 위에 서서 백성에게 손짓하여 매우 조용히 한 후에 히브리 말로 말하니라

40 After receiving the commander's permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic:

1 부형들아 내가 지금 여러분 앞에서 변명하는 말을 들으라

1 "Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense."

2 그들이 그가 히브리 말로 말함을 듣고 더욱 조용한지라 이어 이르되

2 When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet. Then Paul said:

3 나는 유대인으로 길리기아 다소에서 났고 이 성에서 자라 가말리엘의 문하에서 우리 조상들의 율법의 엄한 교훈을 받았고 오늘 너희 모든 사람처럼 하나님께 대하여 열심이 있는 자라

3 "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.

4 내가 이 도를 박해하여 사람을 죽이기까지 하고 남녀를 결박하여 옥에 넘겼노니

4 I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison,

5 이에 대제사장과 모든 장로들이 내 증인이라 또 내가 그들에게서 다메섹 형제들에게 가는 공문을 받아 가지고 거기 있는 자들도 결박하여 예루살렘으로 끌어다가 형벌 받게 하려고 가더니

5 as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 가는 중 다메섹에 가까이 갔을 때에 오정쯤 되어 홀연히 하늘로부터 큰 빛이 나를 둘러 비치매

6 "About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.

7 내가 땅에 엎드러져 들으니 소리 있어 이르되 사울아 사울아 네가 왜 나를 박해하느냐 하시거늘

7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, 'Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?'

8 내가 대답하되 주님 누구시니이까 하니 이르시되 나는 네가 박해하는 나사렛 예수라 하시더라

8 "'Who are you, Lord?' I asked. " 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,' he replied.

9 나와 함께 있는 사람들이 빛은 보면서도 나에게 말씀하시는 이의 소리는 듣지 못하더라

9 My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.

11 나는 그 빛의 광채로 말미암아 볼 수 없게 되었으므로 나와 함께 있는 사람들의 손에 끌려 다메섹에 들어갔노라

11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.

12 율법에 따라 경건한 사람으로 거기 사는 모든 유대인들에게 칭찬을 듣는 아나니아라 하는 이가

12 "A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.

13 내게 와 곁에 서서 말하되 형제 사울아 다시 보라 하거늘 즉시 그를 쳐다보았노라

13 He stood beside me and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very moment I was able to see him.

21 나더러 또 이르시되 떠나가라 내가 너를 멀리 이방인에게로 보내리라 하셨느니라

21 "Then the Lord said to me, 'Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.' "
